What Is a TEU? Container Sizes and Measurements Explained
Read any news story about ports or shipping lines and one strange abbreviation appears again and again: TEU. Port rankings are published in TEUs. Ship sizes are announced in TEUs. Freight statistics are counted in TEUs. Yet few people outside the industry know what the term actually means — even though it is the basic unit of the entire globalized economy.
The Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit
TEU stands for Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit. It represents the volume of one standard shipping container that is 20 feet long (about 6.1 meters), 8 feet wide (2.44 meters), and 8.5 feet tall (2.59 meters). When a port says it handled 40 million TEUs in a year, it means it moved the equivalent of 40 million of these standard boxes.
The unit exists because containers come in more than one size, and the industry needed a common denominator. The most common container in actual use today is the 40-foot container, which counts as 2 TEUs — sometimes called an FEU, or Forty-foot Equivalent Unit.
The main container types you will encounter
Dry van (general purpose). The classic sealed steel box, used for the vast majority of manufactured goods: electronics, clothing, furniture, packaged food. It comes in 20-foot and 40-foot versions.
High cube. Identical to a standard container but one foot taller (9.5 feet). The extra volume matters for light, bulky cargo such as furniture or automotive parts, and high cubes have become the dominant choice on many trade lanes.
Reefer (refrigerated container). An insulated container with a built-in refrigeration unit, able to hold precise temperatures from deep-freeze to gentle chill. Reefers carry meat, fish, fruit, medicine, and flowers, plugging into the ship's electrical system during the voyage.
Open top and flat rack. Special formats for cargo that does not fit through standard doors: machinery loaded by crane from above, vehicles, steel coils, or oversized project cargo strapped onto a flat platform.
Tank container. A cylindrical tank mounted inside a standard container frame, used for liquids such as chemicals, wine, or food-grade oils. Because the frame has standard dimensions, it stacks and ships exactly like any other box.
Why standardization was revolutionary
Before standard dimensions were agreed internationally in the 1960s, every shipping company used its own box sizes, which defeated the purpose of containerization. A container that fit one ship's cells or one truck's chassis might not fit another's. International standards changed that: today a container packed in any factory in the world fits every container ship, every port crane, every rail wagon, and every truck chassis built to the same specification.
That interchangeability is the quiet genius of the system. The box is boring on purpose. Because every unit has identical corner fittings and dimensions, handling equipment can be automated, stowage can be planned by software, and a single crane movement takes the same few seconds whether the box contains sneakers or servers.
How many TEUs does a ship carry?
Capacity has grown relentlessly. Early container ships in the 1960s carried a few hundred TEUs. By the 1990s, 4,000-TEU vessels were common. Today the largest ships exceed 24,000 TEUs — a single vessel carrying the equivalent of more than 12,000 forty-foot truckloads.
Ship categories are even named after the infrastructure they fit. "Panamax" ships were sized to the original Panama Canal locks; "Neopanamax" fits the expanded locks opened in 2016; the giants beyond that are often called Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs).
Reading the numbers like an insider
Once you know the unit, industry statistics become readable. A port "handling 30 million TEUs" is counting every loaded and empty box that crossed its quays. A shipping line "deploying 500,000 TEUs of capacity" is describing the size of its fleet. And when analysts discuss "TEU-miles," they are measuring how much cargo moved how far — the true output of the world's maritime highway system.
