Dangerous Goods at Sea: How Hazardous Cargo Travels Safely
Somewhere on almost every large container ship, there are goods that could burn, corrode, explode, or poison — perfectly legally. Modern life runs on hazardous materials, from lithium batteries to pool chlorine, and the maritime industry has spent decades building a rulebook that lets them travel safely among everything else.

The subtle science is segregation. Some substances must never be neighbors: an oxidizer beside a flammable is a fire waiting for a spark; acids near cyanides can generate lethal gas. Stowage planners apply segregation tables deciding which classes may share a hold, which must be separated by compartments, and which belong on deck where a problem can be fought — or jettisoned. On a ship carrying thousands of boxes, this is a three-dimensional chemistry puzzle solved by software and checked by officers.
When the system is tested
The industry's hardest lessons have come from misdeclared cargo — shippers hiding or mislabeling hazardous goods to avoid fees and restrictions. Several major container ship fires have been traced to undeclared chemicals or poorly handled battery shipments, which is why carriers now run inspection programs, screen booking data for suspicious descriptions, and impose severe penalties for false declarations. Honesty in a cargo manifest is, quite literally, a safety system.
The new frontier: batteries
Lithium batteries — in devices, in bulk, and in electric vehicles — are the fastest-growing dangerous goods challenge. Their failure mode, thermal runaway, burns hot and resists conventional extinguishing. Regulations are tightening, specialized firefighting equipment is spreading, and carriers are developing dedicated policies for EV shipments — the rulebook, as always, evolving one incident at a time.
